Everything that’s not writing books

The process of writing a book includes different stages: getting a brain fart, plotting the story, doing research, writing, editing, re-writing, getting a draft reader, and then considering/incorporating whatever feedback I’ve received. It’s a lengthy process, but it’s not the only thing I do as a self-published writer.

First of all, there’s reading: I read as a hobby, but I also do it because, as an editor, I want to be as up-to-date as possible with whatever trends are happening in the publishing world.

I also have to plan, do research on, and prepare blog posts, my Instagram and Facebook posts, authors’ birthdays and quotes, preparing and scheduling everything so that I can be at ease knowing I won’t have to scramble at the last minute, figuring out what photos to take, trying to make things not look repetitive, translating and proofing all the texts…

I also spend time on different blogs, not just for research (or distraction), but also because I like knowing what other writers and readers are interested in sharing.

I also try to fit in some physical activity—yoga, walking, jogging, riding my bicycle—because a) I know I don’t always have great posture, and b) I’ve got energy I need to burn off. (And c) I want to eat ice cream with limited guilt.) Plus, when I start my day with yoga after breakfast, I feel a different energy and I’m more focused throughout the day.

Something else that can’t be missing in my day-to-day? Procrastination. I need it.

What makes up your work or schedule? What are complementary activities? Do you enjoy them?
